2003-12-05, RPCVLA - Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg will be the keynote speaker at this year`s Annual International Dinner hosted by the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Los Angeles (RPCVLA). Local Hero Award winners, Sharon Stricker, Executive Director of LACER and Amanda Wash, Founder of A Foundation of African Children Today (AFACT)will also be honored on December 7, 2003.WHO: Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg; Kevin Quigley, President of the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA); Sharon Stricker, Executive Director of LACER; Amanda Wash, Founder of A Foundation of African Children Today (AFACT), A Place Called Home Blues Band, Guitar Ensemble, and renowned APCH Dancers. WHAT: Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Los Angeles (RPCVLA) International Dinner & Local Hero Award Ceremony. WHERE: Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, 570 West Avenue 26, Los Angeles. WHEN: Sunday, December 7, 2003 5-10pm RPCVLA is honored to announce Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg as keynote speaker at RPCVLA’s 2003 Annual International Dinner. She will talk about the Third Goal of Peace Corps: bringing the world back to America, international affairs, and current politics. In addition, newly elected NPCA President, Kevin Quigley will attend from Washington, DC to speak on the role of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in the US. For the second year, RPCVLA will present the Local Hero Award to two members of the community who have brought the spirit of the Peace Corps to Los Angeles and remind us all that we can still make a difference. This year’s honorees are Sharon Stricker, Executive Director of LACER, a non-profit organization which runs arts and literacy based after school programs in middle schools in LAUSD; and Amanda Wash, Founder of AFACT (A Foundation of African Children Today) a community based organization that provides support for famine and AIDS stricken children in Africa. The Annual International Dinner is the biggest event hosted by RPCVLA. Each year more than 150 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, representing Peace Corps service in 190 countries since the 1960’s, come to celebrate and partake in the festivities.
