2004-08-20, ARDS FOUNDATION - The ARDS Foundation announces the expansion of their online newsletter. The ARDS Foundation is a national, not for profit organization composed of volunteers who have been personally affected by Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ARDS affects approximately 150,000 Americans every year, killing half of them. One cannot live with ARDS; you must live through ARDS, or die. The bimonthly newsletter provides information and resources about ARDS as well as about the ARDS Community.(PRWEB) August 20, 2004 -- The ARDS Foundation announces the expansion of their ONLINE NEWSLETTER at their website at http://www.ardsusa.org/ Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life threatening condition that leads to a dangerous loss in the functioning of the lungs. Although there are over 60 distressed conditions that can bring on ARDS, the most common are pneumonia, sepsis (an overwhelming infection in the body), aspiration of fumes, food or stomach contents into the lung, and trauma. These conditions cause the body to manufacture substances that may cause inflammation in the lungs. Once inflamed, the alveoli (air sacs) are then unable to perform the normal oxygenation of the blood. There are approximately 150,000 reported cases of ARDS per year. Yet because ARDS is often linked with other distressed conditions, it is believed that the actual number of cases per year is significantly higher. ARDS is particularly complicated because no patient enters the hospital with ARDS as their admitting diagnosis. However, almost anyone who is admitted to a hospital is at risk to develop ARDS. Over 75,000 Americans will die this year from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The ARDS Foundation distributes ONLINE NEWSLETTERS at least twice a month. This newsletter includes a Featured ARDS Story, which summarizes the plight of one who suffered from ARDS and either triumphed or succumbed to the syndrome. It also includes links to recent topical articles of interest to the ARDS community that include such topics as COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, sepsis, post traumatic stress disorder, ICU delirium, and dyspnea. Other topics may include upcoming events that the ARDS Foundation is planning locally or nationally. Periodically, a PRAYER and SUPPORT NEWSLETTER is distributed to support those who are in crisis. ARDS Foundation President, Eileen Rubin Zacharias, had her life irreparably altered nine years ago when, at the age of thirty-three, she spent nine weeks in the hospital with ARDS. “Part of the responsibility of having our website is to provide accurate and current information to the ARDS community and to the public about this syndrome and related lung ailments that affect our community. We are committed to educating, as well as increasing awareness about this devastating syndrome. We also want to ensure that the ARDS Community is well informed about related medical information,” said Eileen Zacharias, ARDS Foundation President. “Over the past five years, we have been working passionately to inform and educate those within and outside of the ARDS Community about this syndrome and the conditions that will affect them post ARDS. It is through our newsletter that these folks are able to locate links with the latest relevant information." Paula Blonski, who lost her sister, Marybeth, a nurse, at the age of thirty-six, said, “Families who find themselves suddenly thrust into the ARDS Community need information and support and they need it what they can get to a computer, whether that is at 3:00 in the afternoon or 3:00 in the morning. When families are confronted with this diagnosis and they have nowhere to turn with questions, for information, or support, our volunteers are here, to offer support based upon their own experiences,” said Blonski, Vice President of the ARDS Foundation. “Our online newsletter brings information, education and awareness into your email inbox, accessible when you are.” To learn more about ARDS and the ARDS Foundation, and to sign up for their online newsletter, please visit http://www.ardsusa.org/ or call 1.312.749.7047.
