RateMyTeachers.com currently boasts 5.9 million teacher ratings, over 875,000 teachers, and is currently in use at more than 40,000 middle schools and high schools across the United States and Canada. The site has been in operation since August 2001 and has quickly spread across North America through word of mouth.
Co-founder Michael Hussey, “We understand that the ultimate environment for learning is one where a partnership exists between the teacher, the student, and the parents. That partnership requires communication – and RateMyTeachers.com is proud to be the catalyst for thousands of conversations between teachers and students, and soon with parents, too.”
Parents will rate teachers on a scale of 1-5 based on the following questions:
1) Did you and your child know what was expected in this class?
2) Did the teacher treat your child with respect, care, and knowledge of child`s needs?
3) Was the classroom work the right difficulty for your child?
Those three results will be averaged into an “overall” score. The parent will also have the option of leaving comments about their experience with the particular teacher, just as is now done by students. Parents will be able to rate the performance of all teachers, including elementary school teachers. Former students, 13 years of age an older, will also be able to rate their former elementary teachers. Current students, grade 6 and above, will continue to rate teachers as they have for the past 3 years.
With the assistance of over 3000 volunteer administrators, RateMyTeachers reviews every teacher rating before it is posted to the website. Any malicious or vulgar comments are removed. If a teacher is at odds with any rating, that person can easily flag the rating and comment for a second review. The majority of ratings are positive, with students celebrating their teachers.
