The Tribute to Charlie Palmieri concert is part of the Annual Benefit for Global Arts & Culture Series, a fundraising effort by the Multicultural Music Group, Inc. (MMG). MMG is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 that provides free music education and training to inner city youth as they prepare for music school entrance exams and auditions.
Legendary artists in their own right will perform in memory of the musician who inspired them as youth and taught them the virtue of multicultural music and education. Composer Ray Santos, four-time Grammy winner and Academy Award Nominee for Best Song in a Picture, will lead a 25-piece orchestra that will resemble the classic Big Band structure and, as an added feature, highlight a complete string section. Among the artists who will perform in November’s concert are sensual singer Jose “Cheo” Feliciano, the legendary Richie Ray, fiery percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, hot salsa trombonist, Jimmy Bosch, virtuoso violinist, Alfredo de la Fe, world renowned Latin Jazz musician Mario Rivera, master sonero and vocalist Herman Olivera and many others.
Seven-time Grammy-winner, pianist Eddie Palmieri will pay tribute to his brother with an original suite and with some classic Palmieri compositions. The MMG orchestra, along with the special guests, will unveil many of Charlie Palmieri’s unrecorded compositions and his own “Lullaby,” composed for Charlie’s grand-children shortly before his untimely passing in 1988. The MMG Orchestra includes up to 25 professional musicians with a classical, Latin, world music and jazz repertoire.
“My brother was the most selfless musician I have ever known and it can be stated that he led by example in the tradition of the successful artist who never leaves his community behind,” Palmieri stated. “It is an honor to be involved with a tribute to my brother’s memory, along with these great artists and with MMG and its leaders, Dr. Luis Mojica and Professor Ray Santos.” Mr. Eddie Palmieri was recently named Honorary Chairperson of MMG.
This concert will be in benefit of MMG and its music education programs, including the Symphonic Youth Program, which prepares inner-city youth for music school entrance exams and auditions. Part of Charlie Palmieri’s legacy was his unwavering commitment to teaching instrumental music and his selfless donation of his valuable time to underprivileged children of NYC.
Dr. Luis Mojica, Executive Director of MMG, said that the “Tribute to Charlie is a poignant example of the historical importance and social influence of music. The Tribute to Charlie will feature the MMG Orchestra, which includes some of Charlie’s top students, colleagues and friends. This group of musicians will be honoring him by interpreting some of his recorded hits and unreleased masterpieces, performed by the best Latin music and Jazz artist, such as his younger brother, Eddie Palmieri.”
Charlie Palmieri’s genius and generosity shaped the future of Latin music and had a profound impact on many of his former students, friends and colleagues, such as Herbie Mann, Xavier Cugat, Desi Arnaz, Stan Kenton, the London Symphony Orchestra, Cheo Feliciano, Eddie Palmieri, Placido Domingo, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Ray Santos, Billy Taylor and many others, as well as many other celebrated as premier Salsa, Jazz, Latin Jazz and Classical talents.
