2004-10-01, ISHA FOUNDATION - 54-year old Michigan physician uses yoga benefits to compete in Dearborn Oktoberfest Pole Sitting Contest to raise funds for Isha Foundation humanitarian aid. Medical associates and yoga practitioners challenged to show support.(PRWEB) October 2, 2004 --As yoga gathers increasing popularity, Michigan physician Kalpana Rajdev regularly prescribes yoga to help patients become more flexible, fit and healthy. Her own personal yoga practice has proved that the subtle aspects of yoga beyond the physical benefits include emotional and spiritual well being that Dr. Rajdev describes as a state of stillness, inner peace, calmness and overall balance. These are just the qualities that might help her win the Oktoberfest Pole Sitting Contest, a feat of endurance that will require the 54 year old Farmington Hills physician to sit on top of a six-foot telephone pole for two days. The Pole Sitting Contest is a new feature at the Dearborn, Michigan Oktoberfest, a free festival on Saturday October 2 and Sunday October 3 from noon to 10 p.m. both days. Although Dr. Rajdev’s public demonstration of the benefits of yoga may be a sideline advantage, the nobler cause of the contest is to raise funds for local non-profit organizations. If Kalpana wins the Pole Sitting Contest, Isha Foundation will collect a grand prize of funds solicited from local businesses. Aided by hundreds of Detroit area volunteers and hundreds of thousands world-wide, Isha Foundation conducts yoga programs for total well being, as well as grassroots humanitarian initiatives around the world, including Action for Rural Rejuvenation, a revitalization program for 13,000 impoverished villages in rural southern India. Isha Foundation works to create a peaceful society by helping create peaceful individuals, and to foster world peace and international cooperation. And just how have pole sitting and a doctor-yogi raising funds for good causes come together? Pole sitting is a contest of endurance. It originated in Holland after the great flooding of 1952. People were forced to climb poles and sit until rescued. To commemorate the disaster, pole sitting became an annual event. It has since spread across Europe and can be found at many festive events, often associated with charities to raise funds. How much yoga can Dr. Kalpana Rajdev do on her pole? Kalpana will march in the opening ceremony parade on Saturday, October 2 at noon from the Henry Ford Centennial Library to the main Oktoberfest tent. She will mount her pole at 12:45 p.m. Two officials will mark times of two 15-minute breaks for Kalpana to leave the pole (4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) If she fails to return to the pole within the given time Kalpana will be disqualified. She will continue to sit on her pole until 10 p.m. and return to mount her pole by 11 a.m. Sunday. Kalpana will get only one 15-minute break at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The contest will end at 9:30 p.m. How you can help. Dr. Kalpana Rajdev is asking support from citizens of the Greater Detroit area as well as challenging medical professionals and everyone across the country who has been positively influenced by yoga practice to help. Festival goers can give to Kalpana’s cause at the donation box at the site of her pole. Others can call in a donation by credit card to 248-478-4786 or send a check payable to Isha Foundation/Pole Contest, 25260 Carollton Dr., Farmington Hills, MI 48335. Supporters can also sign up to assist her during the contest and at break time. Supporters are invited to email Kalpana messages of encouragement to .
