Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life threatening condition that leads to a dangerous loss in the functioning of the lungs. Although there are over 60 distressed conditions that can bring on ARDS, the most common are pneumonia, sepsis (an overwhelming infection in the body), aspiration of fumes, food or stomach contents into the lung, and trauma. These conditions cause the body to manufacture substances that may cause inflammation in the lungs. Once inflamed, the alveoli (air sacs) are then unable to perform the normal oxygenation of the blood. The Westfield Works Wonders event is an exclusive evening of early holiday shopping intended to create an enjoyable shopping event for customers prior to the busy holiday season! Buy a ticket to the event for $5 from the ARDS Foundation, and shop! It is that easy. The entire proceeds of the prepaid ticket will to the ARDS Foundation. November 14, 2004, there will be special discounts at the stores, free gift boxes, prizes, entertainment, refreshments and more! The mall is closed to the general public and while only those who buy tickets can attend, there will be tickets on sale by select charities that evening. To secure advance tickets from the ARDS Foundation, email us or call at 312.749.7047. Approximately 150,000 cases of ARDS are reported each year in the United State, and only about half of those patients survive this syndrome. Every case of ARDS is critical and all ARDS patients need to be ventilated for anywhere from days, to weeks, to months. Many survivors leave the hospital with an array of complex post ARDS conditions. ARDS Foundation President, Eileen Rubin Zacharias, had her life irreparably altered almost ten years ago when she was a thirty-three year old attorney and suddenly found herself suffering from a backache that turned into sepsis and ARDS. “Everything that we do at the ARDS Foundation, from sharing our hospital experiences, sending out literature, to hosting fundraisers is important," said Eileen Zacharias, ARDS Foundation President. "Even though ARDS affects more people in the United States than breast cancer and AIDS, most people still have not heard of it. It is important to do whatever we can to raise public awareness.” Paula Blonski, who lost her sister, Marybeth, a nurse, at the age of thirty-six, said, “Since we incorporated the ARDS Foundation, we have worked tirelessly to do whatever we can to make a difference. Be it to educate others about ARDS, support someone in crisis, gather petition signatures, we know that what we are doing might only affect a few people at a time, but we know how important it is to do just that," said Blonski, Vice President of the ARDS Foundation. Support the ARDS Foundation at the Westfield Works Wonders event to be held at the Westfield/Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, IL, on the evening of Sunday, November 14, 2004. What a great way to "make a difference" and get your holiday shopping done! To learn more about ARDS and the ARDS Foundation, please visit http://www.ardsusa.org/ or call 1.312.749.7047.
