2005-05-05, The ALS Association Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter - Shawn Crawford, a Van Wyck, SC native, will join in the ribbon cutting ceremony and will kickoff the Lancaster Walk to D`Feet ALS with an inaugural lap around the track. The 5K walk will help raise funding for research that will one day lead to a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig`s disease.Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Crawford will join the 2005 Lancaster Walk to D’Feet ALS. Crawford, a Van Wyck, SC native, will also participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony and will kickoff the walk with an inaugural lap around the track. Crawford won the gold in the Men’s Track and Field 200 meter in Athens, Greece.
The Walk to D’Feet ALS is an annual event hosted by the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association. The annual walks take place in several cities throughout the Carolinas, and typically gather several hundred supporters and Walk Teams to participate in the fundraiser.
The 5K walk will be held Saturday, May 21 at the Lancaster Country Rec Center – Springdale Track. Registration and check-in will take place at 9 am, with the walk starting at 10 am. The walk site is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and participants do not need to walk any or the entire route to join.
The association’s sole mission is to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and to improve the lives for those living with ALS. This year’s goal is $40,000. All contributions are used to fund research to lead to a cure for the disease, and for equipment and services for ALS patients.
“The continued support and awareness makes it possible to provide those afflicted with ALS the proper medical treatment and facilities to ease their struggles,” said Jerry Dawson, Executive Director of the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter of the ALSA. “The funding continues to support the research that will one day lead to a cure for the debilitating disease.”

ALS affects as many as 30,000 people in the United States at any given time and 5,600 new cases are diagnosed annually. Jim “Catfish” Hunter, the former World Series Champion and Hall of Famer from eastern North Carolina, died from complications of the disease. The Chapter was later named in his honor. The Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, which covers both North and South Carolina, is one of 39 chapters of The ALS Association.
