So, they have figured out a way to round up support for humanitarian relief efforts.SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (PRWEB) September 7, 2005 -- Members of the Bay Area`s queer Country & Western community could not stand to keep watching the heart-wrenching news about the wrath of Katrina without doing something. So, they have figured out a way to round up support for humanitarian relief efforts. Kindred souls from three lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), Country & Western organizations have banded together to host a series of Katrina Relief fundraisers.
The groups will pool their money and focus their support on feeding hungry people in the regions hardest hit by Katrina. Their collective funds will be directed through the Rainbow World Fund`s Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to help America`s Second Harvest, the nation`s food bank network. Donations can be made directly at http://www.rainbowfund.org — 100% of donations will go toward helping the survivors recover.
"I`m proud to be part of our LGBT Country & Western subculture," said the groups` organizer, Maureen A. Kenney. "We`re caring and compassionate people — and, we know what it`s like to face adversity. Many of the people in our community are from or have friends and family in the regions desecrated by Katrina. We simply had to do something to help our sisters and brothers who are in such desperate need along the Gulf."
The LGBT Country & Western groups working together to bring relief to Katrina survivors include:
Sundance Association For Country-Western Dancing — http://www.sundancesaloon.org – 550 Barneveld Ave., San Francisco
The Sundance Association will help by fundraising through their weekly dance venue, the Sundance Saloon.
- On every Sunday during September, the Sundance Association will donate $1 from every $5 dollar regular admission they collect;
- Sunday, 9/11/05 will be a special fundraising Sunday during which they will collect additional, voluntary donations
"Our entire organization is based on the principal of community and helping each other," said Ingu Yun, founder and president of the Sundance Association for Country–Western Dancing. "We come together frequently — not only to dance — but, to support worthy causes. The people of the ravaged Gulf Coast region need our help right now — our LGBT Country and Western people have a spirit of strength, hope and generosity to share with them."
Golden State Gay Rodeo Association (GSGRA) - Bay Area Chapter
Leveraging the timing of the upcoming Best Buck in the Bay—San Francisco Bay Area`s 14th Annual Gay Rodeo & Festival (www.bestbuckinthebay.com), the Bay Area Chapter of GSGRA will raise funds in a couple of ways.
- On Wednesday, 9/14/05, kicking off the rodeo festival weekend, Live @ Harvey`s (at 18th and Castro) will be a special evening (starting at 8 PM) of live entertainment featuring Nashville recording artist Steff Mahan (www.steffmahan.com) in the Castro district of San Francisco. Voluntary donations will be collected at the event.
- In conjunction with the Southern Comfort Buckin` Ball and Finlandia Rebellion dance parties on Saturday, 9/17/05 at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco, a special Silent Auction will be held with all proceeds from the auction going to this effort.
"Gay rodeo has always been about building community and reaching out to others. When a competitor in our arena suffers or a member of our broad family is down, we always come together to take care of them," said Eric Hanson, Mr. International Gay Rodeo Association 2004. "In the wake of this tragic event, it only seems natural for us to do whatever we can to make a difference in the lives of the many who`ve suffered from Katrina`s wrath."
The series of LGBT Country and Western fundraisers will culminate in Walnut Creek, California:
Club 1220 — http://www.club1220.com – 1220 Pine St., Walnut Creek
- Club 1220, a Walnut Creek-based LGBT dance club offering weekly Country & Western dancing, will host a fundraiser on Tuesday, 9/20/05, featuring music, dancing, dinner-buffet, and door prizes. Entrance fee: $5.
"Strengthened by adversity, pride and love, we extend a strong, caring hand to the victims of this catastrophy," said Kishana Watson, Club 1220 patron – and one of the organizers for Club 1220`s fundraiser. "I am proud to be a part of this Country and Western community. We are loving compassionate people who value life and each other."
Donations are still sought from restaurants, spas, salons, hotels and, travel agents — to be used for the Silent Auction, door prizes and raffles. Donated gift certificates are needed by this Saturday, 9/10/05 — please contact Maureen A. Kenney using the e-mail form to the right of this release.
